Morford, Mark P. O., and Robert J. Lenardon. Classical Mythology. Oxford: Oxford UP, 2011.
This is a textbook that gives a wide survey of ancient Greek mythology. It is a trustworthy source that was assigned as reading material by a professor here at U of M. On page 132 in the chapter on creation the Muses are named and described. Among them is Calliope, the muse of epic poetry. It is also shown in this book that epic poetry was similar to modern fiction or historical fiction. When I was trying to find a name for my main character in my “Why I Write” scale-up I looked to Greek mythology for inspiration. My character invents the first story and so giving her the name of the muse who inspired such fiction was a clear choice.
